We have (a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2

(2x + y)2 = (2x)2 + (2 (x) 2x (x) y) + y2 

= (4x2 + y2) + 4xy 

= 40 + 4 x 6 

= 40 + 24

(2x + y)2 = 64

(2x + y)2 = 82

2x + y = 8
