Find the sum of –2 and –3, using the number line.

To add –2 and –3, on the number line, we first move 2 steps to the left of 0, reaching –2. Then we move 3 steps to the left of –2 and reach –5. (Fig. 3.2)

Thus, –2 + (–3) = –5.
