•Gandhiji chose salt because salt was an essential commodity of daily use by people of all sections, the rich and poor alike.

     •All the sections of society could identify with it and everypev could be brought together into a united struggle.

     •It is one of the most important items of food and, according to Gandhiji, the tax on salt and the Government monopoly over its production, revealed the most oppressive face of the ciloniac rule.
