Why pressure is a scalar quantity?

The pressure is defined as the ratio of force to area. We know that force is a vector quantity but the pressure is considered to be the scalar quantity. Although force is along the direction of the area which is taken into account, the direction of the quantity remains unchanged making the pressure a scalar quantity.
