Find the ratio in which the y-axis divides the line segment joining the points (5, -6) and (-1, -4). Also, find the coordinates of the point of division.

Let P(5, -6) and Q(-1, -4) be the given points.

Let y-axis divide PQ in the ratio k:1

Then, the coordinates of the point of division are

Since, R lies on y-axis and x-coordinates of every point on y-axis is zero

Hence, the required ratio is 5 :1

Putting k=5  in the coordinates of R, we get
