The figure shows the magnetic field of earth.

1. Identify the labels A, B, C.

2. The lines drawn on a map through places that have the same declination are called………

3. The horizontal component of earth’s magnetic field at a place is 0.25 × 10-4T and the resultant magnetic field is 0.5 × 10-4 T.

Best answer

1. the labels A, B, C:

  • A – Magnetic equator
  • B – Magnetic axis
  • C – Declination

2. Isogonic lines

3. Horizontal component of earth’s magnetic field is

B = BH cosδ

0.25 × 10-4 = 0.5 × 10-4 δ

δ = 60°

Vertical component of earth’s magnetic field is

Bv = B sin δ = 0.5 × 10-4 sin 60 = 0.43 × 10-4 T.
