A jet plane is travelling towards west at a speed of 1800 km/h. What is the voltage difference developed between the ends of the wing 25 m long if the earth’s magnetic field at the location has a magnitude of 5.0 × 10-4 and the dip angle is 30?

Best answer

v = 1800 km/h = 500 ms-1 I = 25 m

Vertical component of B along horizontal

B = -B sinθ = 5.0 × 10-4 sin 30° = 2.5 × 10-4 T

e = B/v sinθ

= 500 × 2.5 × 10-4 × 25

= 31 V

The direction of the wing is immaterial.
