Copper is leached out using acid or bacteria. The solution containing Cu2+ ions is treated with iron scrap or H2 to recover copper.

Cu2+ (aq) + Fe(s) → Cu(s) + Fe2+(aq)

Cu2+ (aq) + H2(g) → Cu(s) + 2H+(aq)
