Gabriel phthalimide synthesis involves the conversion of alkyl halide (R – X) to 1° amine (R – NH₂). Ammonolysis of R – X, on the other hand give 2°, 3° and quaternary salt as other byproducts. Hence, for the production of pure 1° amines, Gabriel phthalimide synthesis is preferred to ammonolysis reaction.
