Explain why normal Zeeman effect occurs only in atoms with even number of electrons

Normal Zeeman effect can be seen in atoms having zero spin. (because it is non-zero spin value that creates anomaly in the Zeeman effect) If there are even number of electrons in the valance shell, they should pair off and their magnetic moments get cancelled. So they acts like spinless (S = 0) particles. Hence, for normal Zeeman effect to occur, valance electrons of the atom must be even.
