Aqua regia is the mixture of concentrated hydrochloric acid concentrated and nitric acid in the ratio of 3:1.

Aqua regia is a yellow-orange fuming liquid. Aqua regia was so named by alchemists because it can dissolve the noble metals gold and platinum.

Aqua regia is a strong oxidizing agent. Aqua regia dissolves metals by first oxidizing them. Noble metals which are not prone to oxidation using other acids are oxidized easily by the action of aqua regia.

The chemistry of the glass does not permit to react with aqua regia, and therefore it is safe to store in glass containers.
