Three closed vessels A, B and C are at the same temperature T and contain gases which obey the Maxwellian distribution of velocities.Vessel A contains only 02,B only N2 and C a mixture of equal quantities of 02 and N2. If the average speed of the 02 molecules in vessel A is V1 that of the N2 molecules in vessel B is v2, the average speed of the 02 molecules in vessel C is Where M is the mass of an oxygen molecule

Best answer

According to Maxwells distribution of speeds, the average speed of molecules of a gas is given by

v=√8kT/mπ.

Thus average velocity depends only on the temperature and molecular weight of the gas.

Average velocity will be same for O2 in both of the vessels.

So, in the mixture also, the oxygen molecules will have the same average velocity in vessel C i.e v1
