Iceberg floats in water with part of it submerged. What is the fraction of the volume of iceberg submerged if the density of ice is ρi = 0.917 g cm–3?

Let the volume of the iceberg be V. The weight of the iceberg is ρi Vg. If x is the fraction submerged, then the volume of water displaced is xV. The buoyant force is ρwxVg where r w is the density of water.

ρi Vg = ρwxVg

x = ρi /ρw = 0.917
