Best answer

Oxidising agent = HNO3

Reducing agent = l2

Skeletal equation:

Division into half reactions:

Oxidation half reaction,

Reduction  half reaction,

Balancing atoms other than H and O:

Balancing  H and O atoms :

l+ 6H2O ⟶ 2HIO3 + 10H+

HNO3 + H⟶ NO2 + H2O

Balancing the charge on the half reactions by adding electrons and equalising the number of electrons:

l+ 6H2O ⟶ 2HIO3 + 10H+ + 10e-

10HNO3 + 10H+ 10e- ⟶ 10NO2 + 10H2O

Add the two half reaction,

l+ 6H2O + 10HNO3 + 10H+ 10e- ⟶ 2HIO3 + 10H+ + 10e- + 10NO2 + 10H2O

i.e., l2 + 10HNO3 ⟶ 2HIO3 + 10NO2 + 4H2O
