The genuiness of a pearl can be verified by dipping it in lemon juice. Why ?

Real pearl is nothing but calcium carbonate wihc gives effervescence of carbon dioxide when dipped in citric acid present in lemon juice. But imitation pearl is made up of plastic which does not give out carbon dioxide with lemon juice.
