Detergents are better cleansing agents than soaps because they can be used even with hard water. The charged ends of detergents do not form insoluble precipitates with calcium and magnesium ions in hard water. When soap is used for washing clothes with hard water, it reacts with the calcium and magnesium ions of hard water to form an insoluble precipitate called scum. Scum sticks to the cloth to be washed and it makes the cleaning of clothes difficult.
Detergents have a stronger cleansing action than soaps and are more soluble in water than soaps.
