(a) Nuclear fission is the process of splitting a heavy nuclear into ligher ones. On the other hand, nuclear fusion is the process in which two light nuclei fuse together to form a heavy nucleus. But in both the cases, a certain mass disappears which is converted into energy.
(b) Nuclear fission is brought about by using neutrons whereas nuclear fusion occurs only at high temperatures.
( c) Energy released during fusion `(~6.75 MeV//"necleon")` is more than that released during fission `(~ 0.85 MeV//"nucleon")`.
(d) Nuclear fission can be controlled and as such be employed for commercial generation of power whereas nuclear has a yet not been controlled to be of any practical use.
( e) Fission products are radioactive whereas fusion products are harmless.
(f) The fission fuel is limited but fusion fuel is available in plenty.
(g) Fission is a quick process which is not the case with fusion which takes place in serveral steps.
(h) Neutrons are the link particles in fission whereas protons are the link particles in fusion.
