A natural taxon refers to a group of similar, genetically related individuals having certain characters distinct from those of other groups. For example, all the insects form a taxon, so do the fishes, frogs, lizards, birds, algae, fungi and grasses.
A taxon represents real biological objects and is assigned to a category. Some examples of tax at different hierarchical levels are :
(i) Rosa indica is a tax.on and species is its category.
(ii) The taxon of birds is Aves and their category is class.
(iii) The sponges form the taxon Porifera and their category is phylum.
(iv) The taxon of.bacteria is Monera and their category is kingdom.
