Best answer
A piece of magnesium ribbon continues to burn in `SO_(2)` since it reacts to form MgO and S .
`2 Mg + SO_(2) overset("Heat") (to) 2 MgO + S`
This reaction is so much exothermic that heat evolved keeps the magnesium ribbon burning .
