`H_(2)O_(2)` can act as an oxidising as well as a reducing agent both in acidic and basic media as illustrated below :
(i) Oxidising agent in acidic medium
`2Fe^(2+) (aq) + 2H^(+)(aq) + H_(2)O_(2)(aq) to 2Fe^(3+)(aq) + 2H_(2)O(l)`
(ii) Oxidising agent in basic medium
`Mn^(2+)(aq) + H_(2)O_(2)(aq) + 2OH^(-)(aq) to underset("Manganese dioxide")(MnO_(2)(s)) + 2H_(2)O(l)`
(iii) Reducing agent in acidic medium
`2MnO_(4)^(-) (aq) + 6H^(+)(aq) + 5H_(2)O_(2) (aq) to 2Mn^(2+) (aq) + 8 H_(2)O(l) + 5O_(2)(g)`
(iv) Reducing agent in basic medium
`I_(2)(s) + H_(2)O_(2) (aq) + 2OH^(-)(aq) to 2I^(-)(aq) +2H_(2)O(l)+ O_(2)(g)`
