Significance : The octed rule i.e., the tendency of the atom of an element to acquire eight electrons in its valence shell is the basis for the formation of chemical bonds. This applies to both ionic and covalent bonds.
Limitations. The main limitation of the octet rule is that in ceertain molecules, the central atom may have either incomplete or expanded octet. But they are still quite stable.
