An indifference curve is the locus of different combinations of two goods the consumer consumes with each of the combination having the same utility.

The slope of an indifference curve reflects the rate at which consumer is willing to substitute one good for the other. In most of the scenarios, consumer likes both the goods. Therefore if the quantity of one good is reduced, the quantity of other good must increase for the consumer to be equally happy. For this reason , most indifference curves slope downwards.
