A solution is prepared by dissolving `1.08 g` of human serum albumin, a protein obtained from blood plasma, in `50 cm^(3)` of aqueous solution. The solution has an osmotic pressure of `5.85 mm Hg` at `298 K`.
a. What is the molar mass of albumin ?
b. What is the height of water column placed in solution ?

Best answer
Given, `w_("albumin") = 1.08 g`,
`V_("solution") = 50 cm^(3) = (50)/(1000) litre`,
`pi = 5.85 mm = (5.85)/(760) atm, T = 298 K`
`because pi V = (w)/(m)ST`
`:. (5.85)/(760) xx (50)/(1000) = (1.08)/(m) xx 0.0821 xx 298`
`m = 68655 g//mol`
Also, `pi = h.d.g`
`(5.85)/(760) xx 1.01325 xx 10^(5) = h xx1 xx 10^(-3) xx 9.8`
(`pi` in `n//m^(2)`, `d` in `kg//m^(3))`
`h = 7.958 xx 10^(-2) m = 7.958 cm`
