Benzoyl chloride is only very slowly deconposed by water or by dilute sodium hydroxide. Because of this conpounds containing an acitve hydrogen atom can be benzoylated in the presence of dilute aqueous sodium hydroxide. This method of benzoylation is known as the sxohotten-Baumann reaction.
