Dharma Sabha was formed in 1829 in Calcucta by Raja Radhakant Deb. The organisation was (stablished mainly to counter the ongoing social reform movements led by protagonists such as Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Heuty Derozio. They petitioned against british rule which banned the practice of sati in the country, the focus of this new association was to repel the law which was seen as an intrusion by the Britush into the religious affairs of the indigenous people by some sections of the Hindu-community. They considered these steps by British government radical and against their traditions and rituals.
