Role of Diet in performance: A proper diet is essential for good performance. The total energy requirement for a person engaged in physical activity ranges from 3500 to 6000 calories. This depends upon the size, physical condition and severity of the activity performed. Adequate supply of proper diet is essential for a good performance. Diet mainly aims to enhance performance. Diet improves body composition and increases strength and speed. It creates more capacity for practising and training. No doubt it enhances performance.
Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are essential constituents of diet and are the main source of energy. About 60% of energy requirement of an individual is met through carbohydrates. They help in maintaining blood sugar level. Athletes participating in prolonged severe muscular activity should have extra carbohydrates in their diet to avoid exhaustion.
Proteins: The quantity of proteins needed in diets of an individual is quite less as compared to carbohydrates. It may be from 75 to 150 gms. Higher intake of proteins in diet seems to help in performance involving endurance or prolonged activity.
Fat: Fat-rich diet leads to reduced endurance and muscular efficiency. Researchers have found that fatty foods slow down the brain and impair mental functions.
