Childhood is a period from 5 years to 12 years, so we can divide this phase into two parts.

(a) Early childhood, 5-8 yrs.

(b) Later childhood, 9-12 yrs.

(a) Early childhood: This period is characterized by rapid motor developments taking place during pre-school years. The child can run in a controlled manner. He can gallop and hop skillfully. Now he can jump longer. He imitates the things usually seen and practice the same. At this age more of outdoor games should he given opportunities for development of motor components. More the child explores better is the development. He is much active through playful activities.

(b) Later childhood: This age is referred as the best phase of learning motor abilities. The child moves through perfection of movements like running ability to jump improves both vertically as well as horizontally child can throw farther with better technique and accuracy. Speed of running becomes faster, eye hand coordination get developed, hand-leg coordination improves. Physical fitness components such as strength, speed, agility, flexibility and endurance also improve at a faster pace. Mentally he is innocent and does not play tricks.
