The term self-esteem refers to values, beliefs and attitudes. It is described as a person's overall sense of self-worth. It is the assessment of one's own appearance, attitudes, emotions and behaviour. So, it is a global evaluative dimension of the self.
Types of self-esteem
(a) High self-esteem
(b) Low self-esteem
(a) High self-esteem: A person with high self-esteem thinks very high of himself. In general they are normal people having certain characteristics. They
(i) can easily express their opinion.
(ii) are fearless and can talk to anybody.
(iii) love to participate in group activities.
(iv) are confident and aware about personal strength.
(v) are optimistic in life.
(vi) have a cooperative and helping attitude.
(vii) trust others and are aware of personal limitations.
(b) Low self-esteem: Those with low self-esteem generally feel themselves to be unworthy, incapable and incompetent. Generally, they do not value their qualities. They
(i) are extremely critical of themselves.
(ii) ignore their positive qualities.
(iii) have a negative attitude and blaming behaviour.
(iv) have inferiority complex.
(v) are affraid of taking risks.
(vi) do not trust others.
