A brass bar, having cross sectional area 10 cm2 is subjected to axial forces as shown in figure. Find the total elongation of the bar.(Take Y=8x102 t/cm2).

Let , Δl = total elongation of the bar. For the sake of simplicity the force of 3t acting at B may be split into two forces of 5t and 2t as shown in figure. Similarly, the force of 1t acting at C may be split into two forces of 2t and 1t.
