The Olympic flag has a white background, with five equal interlaced rings in the centre, blue, yellow, black, green and red. There is separation wherever two rings separate. The rings are known as the “Olympic rings”. This design symbolizes the five continents of the world that are united by Olympism. These five colours and white were chosen because had the colours of all national flags in existence when the Olympic flag was created. This flag was created by Pierre de Coubertin in 1925. The width to length ratio of the flag is 2:3. It is ceremonially raised at the main venue during the opening ceremony of the Winter or Summer Games. It is lowered at at the main venue and presented to the president of the IOC, who then delivers it to the organisers of the next Games, to symbolize the end of the Games, at the closing ceremony.
