Compute the magnitude of the magnetic field of a long, straight wire carrying a current of 1 A at distance of 1m from it. Compare it with Earth’s magnetic field.

Magnetic field due to a long wire

B = μ x 2I / 4π r where I is current and μ / 4π = 10-7 , r is distance from the wire

Putting the values

B = 10-7 x 2 x 1 / 1

= 2 x 10-7 T .

earth’s magnetic field = 45 x 10-6 T = 450 x 10-7

So the magnetic field is 225 times less strong than earth’s magnetic field .
