Explain dehydration reaction of alcohols.

i. Alcohols on heating with sulphuric acid form alkenes with elimination of water molecule. 

The reaction is known as catalysed dehydration of alcohols. 

ii. The exact conditions of dehydration depend upon the alcohol. 

iii. Dehydration of alcohol is an example of βelimination since -OH group from α-carbon along with H-atom from β-carbon is removed.

The ease of dehydration of alcohol is in the order 3° > 2° > 1°.
