Assertion : Electrolysis of NaCl(aq) produces Na metal.

Reason: Na+ is obtained at cathode.

(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A

(b) Both A and R are true but R is not correct explanation of A

Best answer

Option (d) is correct

Explanation

Discharge potential of Na+ is greater than H+ ion . So H+ ion is preferably discharged at cathode,  liberating H2(g). Again Cl- concentration  in brine solution being high Cl- ion is discharged at anode , liberating Cl2(g). Thus concentration of Na+ and OH- in water will become high. So the solution will be treated as a mixture NaCl and NaOH in water.

Correct option (d) A and R are false

Explanation:

 Electrolysis of brine solution NaCl(aq)

produces NaOH, H2 and Cl2.

Hydrogen gas is obtained at cathode.
