2Cu+ ---> Cu2+ + Cu 

The greater stability of Cu2+(aq) than Cu+(aq) is due to much more -ve Δhyd H of Cu2+(aq) than Cu+(aq) which is more than compensates for the second ionisation enthalpy of Cu.
