A steel rod 100 cm long is clamped at its middle. The fundamental frequency of longitudinal vibrations of the rod is given to be 2.53 kHz. What is the speed of sound in steel?

Here, length of the steel rod, L = 100 cm = 1m 

fundamental frequency of the longitudinal vibrations,

v = 2.53 kHz = 2.53 x 103 Hz

If λ is the wavelength of the wave generated,

 λ/2 = L or λ= 2L = 2m

Therefore, speed of sound in steel rod, i.e.,
