The binding energy per nucleon of deuteron (1H2) and helium atom (2He4) is 1.1 MeV and 7 MeV respectively. If two deuteron atoms react to forrn a single helium atom, the released energy, is

(a) 13.9 MeV

(b) 26.9 MeV

(c) 23.6 MeV

The correct option is (c) 23.6 MeV.

Explanation:

Given : Binding energy per nucleon of deuteron (1H2) = 1.1 MeV

Binding energy per nucleon of helium 2He4 = 7 MeV.

Total binding energy of two deuteron atoms (1H2) (1p + 1n) = 2 (2 x 1.1) =4.4 MeV.

Total binding energy of helium atom (2H4) (2p + 2n) = 4 x 7  = 28 MeV.

Therefore energy released on forming helium nucleus from two deuterons = 28 - 4.4 = 23.6 MeV.
