Correct Answer - Option 4 : To avoid caffeine, tobacco, beer, milk and carbonated beverages

Concept:-

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in which stomach contents backflow to the esophagus which can irritate the lining of the esophagus.
  • Gastroesophageal reflux occurs when the LES (lower esophageal sphincter) weakens or relaxes. This allows the contents of the stomach to flow into the esophagus.

Foods that can treat acid reflux-

  • Green vegetables such as broccoli, asparagus, leafy greens, peas, cucumbers, and Brussels sprouts are known to prevent and reduce acid reflux
  • High-fiber foods such as fruits, vegetables, and grains prevent and reduce acid reflux.
  • Lean Protein- Many high-protein foods are also high in fat, and this can cause acid reflux and heartburn in people suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
  • Oatmeal, whole grain bread, rice, and couscous. These are all good sources of healthy complex carbohydrates.

Key dietary advice given for patients are:

  • To avoid caffeine, tobacco, beer, milk, and carbonated beverages because all these foods and drinks are much more likely to cause acid reflux.
  • Hard stomach acids can also damage the lining of the esophagus.
