Correct Answer - Option 3 : Hormonal therapy

Concept:

  • Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) refers to the enlargement of the prostate gland.
  • It is non-cancerous.
  • BPH increases pressure on the urinary bladder.
  • Bladder walls weaken because of pressure, leading to incomplete emptying of the bladder.

Explanation:

  • Pre-operative nursing care of BPH:
    • Encourage voiding every 2 to 4 hours to prevent urine retention.
    • Urinary retention may lead to infection.
    • Therefore, a healthy diet such as an acid ash diet should be followed.
    • The acid-ash diet reduces inflammation. It consists of fruits, vegetables, and milk.
    • Adequate fluid and electrolytes are provided to maintain balance.

  • Hormonal therapy is given to women with menopausal transitions.
  • Estrogen and progesterone are administered in Hormonal therapy.
  • FDA indicated conditions for the use of progesterone:
    • Amenorrhea
    • Reproductive treatment
    • Endometrial hyperplasia
    • Dysfunctional uterine bleeding
