Correct Answer - Option 4 : 120 - 160 beats/min

Explanation:

  • Assessment of fetal well-being is essential to rule out fetal distress in time and intervene if required.
  • The test to ascertain fetal well-being is commonly performed in the last trimester i.e. around 32 weeks of gestation.

Fetal heart rate is determined by:

  • Non-stress test: It is a non-invasive and most commonly used method. In NST continuous monitoring and recording of FHR is performed.
  • There is an observed association of FHR acceleration with fetal movement, which is suggestive of a healthy fetus.
  • Contraction stress test: it is performed at the end of pregnancy to identify whether the fetus will be able to cope with the contraction during the labor or not.
  • This FHR is monitored using a cardiotocograph.

Auscultation of Fetal heart sound:

  • Best audible through the back of the fetus in vertex and breech presentation.
    • In face presentation, the heart sounds are heard through the fetal chest
    • The maximum intensity of FH sound is below the umbilicus in cephalic presentation and around the umbilicus in breech presentation.

Booster information: Following tests were performed to predict fetal health:

  • Non-stress test/fetal heart rate (Normal FHR is 120-160 bpm)
  • Amniotic fluid volume/ cordocentesis
  • Fetal movements - Cardiff Count 10 formulae
  • Fetal tone
  • Breathing movements of the baby
