For a two – lane rural highway, the (I.R.C.) have recommended that the design volume per day should be:

1.

10,000 passenger cars per day with a peak hour volume of 12% of the average daily volume

2.

5,000 passenger cars per day with a peak hour volume of 10% of the average daily volume

3.

9000 passenger cars per day with a peak hour volume of 8% of the average daily volume

Correct Answer - Option 2 :

5,000 passenger cars per day with a peak hour volume of 10% of the average daily volume

Explanation:

Design Volume:

Design Volume or Design Service Volume can be defined as the maximum hourly volume at which vehicles can reasonably be expected to traverse a point or uniform section of a lane or roadway during a given time period under the prevailing roadway, traffic and control conditions while maintaining a designated level of service.

Table 4 of IRC 64: 1990 gives clear guidelines regarding the Capacity of Roads in Rural Area.

  • But according to the IRC, the design volume is also dependent on the type of terrain; such as plain, rolling or hilly area.
  • And along with the given data, the peak hour volume can be 8 - 10% of the average daily volume for two lane roads.

The data is shown here in a tabulated form-

Terrain

Curvature (Degrees per Kilometer)

Design Service Volume in PCU/Day

Plain

Low (0-50)

15000

High (above 51)

12500

Rolling
