  • Anti-Defection Law:
    • Anti-Defection law comes under the Tenth Schedule schedule of the Indian constitution.
    • It was brought by the 52nd constitutional amendment act in the year 1985.
    • It lays down the process by which legislators may be disqualified on grounds of defection by the Presiding Officer of a legislature based on a petition by any other member of the House.
    • The decision to disqualify on the ground of defection is referred to the Chairman or the Speaker of such House, and his/her decision is final.
    • Law applies to both Parliament and state assemblies.

  • There are 12 schedules in the Indian Constitution:
    • 1st schedule - The list of states and union territories and their territories
    • 2nd schedule - Provisions of the President, Governors of States, Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the House of the People and the Chairman and the Deputy Chairman of the Council of States and the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and the Chairman and the Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council of a State, the Judges of the Supreme Court and of the High Courts and the Comptroller and Auditor-General of India the list of states and union territories and their territories.

    • 6th Schedule - Provisions as to the Administration of Tribal Areas in the States of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram.
    • 7th Schedule - The Union list, State list, and the concurrent list.
    • 8th Schedule - The list of officially recognized languages. [22 till now]
    • 9th Schedule - Provisions as to the validation of certain Acts and Regulations.
    • 10th Schedule - Provisions as to disqualification on the ground of defection.
    • 11th Schedule - The powers, authority, and responsibilities of Panchayats.
    • 12th Schedule - The powers, authority, and responsibilities of Municipalities.
