  • Siraj-ud-Daulah, the Nawab of Bengal was annoyed from Britishers because they started construction of Fort William at Calcutta without his permission and also misused the trading favors.
  • Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah captured Calcutta on June 20, 1756 and took 146 English officers as prisoners and shut them in a small room.
  • Many of them died due to suffocation.
  • This incident was known as the Black Room Tragedy.
  • This incident became a cause of increasing hostility between Britishers and Nawab, which resulted in the Battle of Plassey.

  • Battle of Plassey:
    • It took place in 1757.
    • It was fought between the forces of East India Company headed by Robert Clive and Siraj-Ud-Daulah (Nawab of Bengal).
    • It resulted in the decisive victory of the East India Company over a much larger force of Siraj-Ud-Daulah. 
    • After the Battle of Plassey, the Britishers virtually monopolized the trade and commerce of Bengal.
