Socrates

(Dialectic method)

  • The Socratic method searches for general commonly held truths that shape beliefs and scrutinizes them to determine their consistency with other beliefs.
  • The basic form is a series of questions formulated as tests of logic and fact intended to help a person or group discover their beliefs about some topic; explore definitions, and seek to characterize general characteristics shared by various particular instances.
  • This method proposed an argumentative form of communication between individuals.

Gandhiji

(Nai Talim)

  • Gandhiji had proposed for the nai talim or "basic education" for all.
  • Basic Education is a principle which states that knowledge and work are not separate. Mahatma Gandhi promoted an educational curriculum with the same name based on this pedagogical principle.
  • It can be translated with the phrase 'Basic Education for all'. However, the concept has several layers of meaning. It developed out of Gandhi's experience with the English educational system and with colonialism in general. In that system, he saw that Indian children would be alienated and 'career-based thinking' would become dominant.
  • The three pillars of Gandhi's pedagogy were its focus on the lifelong character of education, its social character, and its form as a holistic process. For Gandhi, education is 'the moral development of the person, a process that is by definition 'lifelong.

Montessori

(Child-centered learning)

  • The Montessori method of education, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori in 1907, is a child-centered educational approach based on scientific observations of children from birth to adulthood.
  • One idea that underpins the Montessori philosophy, is that education must be student-centered.
  • Montessori education strives to provide a motivational educational experience that translates to the real world.

Froebel

(Kindergarten)

  • Kindergarten was the first organized early-childhood educational method. As a keen observer of nature and humanity,
  • Froebel discovered that brain development is most dramatic between birth and age three, and recognized the importance of beginning education earlier than was then practiced.
  • The number of innovations that Froebel pioneered through his research is startling and includes multiple intelligences (different learning styles), play-based, child-centered, holistic education, parent involvement/training, educational paper folding, use of music, games, and movement activities for education.
