  • Lord Shiva is praised as the embodiment of the 4 types of Abhinaya (Acting) in the following sloka:
    • Angikam bhuvanam yasya Vachikam Sarva vangmayam Aharyam Chandra taradi Tam Vande Satvikam sivam.
  • The meaning of the sloka is:
    • We bow to Him the benevolent One Whose limbs are the world, Whose song and poetry are the essence of all language, Whose costume is the moon and the stars.
  • Angika Abhinaya includes expression through movements using the different parts of the body.
    • The subtypes in this abhinaya are divided by the three parts of the body- Anga, Pratyanga, and Upanga.
  • Vaachika Abhinaya includes expression through speech.
    • It is achieved through literature: poems & verse- songs & drama.
  • Aahaarya Abhinaya includes the ornaments, costumes, and props involved in dance.
  • Saatvika Abhinaya the Sanskrit word Sattva has many meanings, the main meaning is purity another meaning is reality and existence.
    • Using the second meaning, this type of Abhinaya can be interpreted as one that is a real expression.
    • It can be simply described as expressing the physical reaction to emotions.
  • There are 8 Sattvika Abhinayas: Stambha, Swedha, Romancha, Ashru, Vepathu, Pralaya, Vaivarnya, Swarabhaga.
