A short column of 20 cm × 20 cm section is reinforced with four bars of steel having total area of steel 20 sq. cm. If permissible compressive stress in steel and concrete is 1300 and 40 kg/cm2, the maximum safe load carrying capacity should not exceed

1. 412 kg
2. 4.120 kg

Correct Answer - Option 3 : 41,200 kg

Explanation:

Safe load on column = Permissible stress in conc. × Area of concrete + Permissible stress in steel × Area of steel.

Given,

c/s of column = 20 cm × 20 cm

Area of reinforcement = 20 cm2

Per stress in concrete = 40 kg/cm2, Per stress in steel = 1300 kg/cm2

∴Safe load = 40 × (20 × 20 - 20) + 20 × 1300

=  40 × 380 + 20 × 1300

= 41200 kg
