A reservoir has a head of 40 m and a channel leading from the reservoir permits a flow rate of 34 m3/s. If the rotational speed of the rotor is 150 r.p.m., what is the power of the turbine? (Take g = 9.81 m/s2)
1. 14.34 MW
2. 13.34 MW
3. 12.34 MW

Best answer
Correct Answer - Option 2 : 13.34 MW

Concept:

The power (P) is given by:

P = ρ g Q h

Where ρ is density, g is the acceleration due to gravity,

Q is discharge, and h is the head.

Calculation:

Given that:

Discharge (Q) = 34 m3/s

Density of water (ρ) = 1000 kg/m3

Net head (h) = 40 m

Acceleration due to gravity (g) = 9.8 m/s2

Power of the Turbine (P) = ρ g Q h = 1000 × 9.81 × 34 × 40

 = 13341600 W = 13.34 MW
