Correct Answer - Option 4 : Free lime content

Explanation:

  • The ability of the cement to retain its volume after it gets hardened is known as Soundness of Cement.
  • Unsoundness in cement is due to lime, magnesia and sulphur in it.

Unsoundness due to lime Unsoundness due magnesia
Measured by Le-Chatelier test Measured by Autoclave test
It consists of a split cylinder of dia and height 30 mm and indicator arm length 165 mm. Mould size 25 mm × 25 mm × 250 mm made from lean cement.

100 g of cement gauged with 0.78 P and paste is filled in split cylinder covering from top and bottom with the help of glass plates and the entire assembly is immersed in the water having the temperature in the range 27-35°C for 24 hours. The cylinder is removed from the assembly and distance between the indicator arm is noted (x).

The entire assembly is again immersed in water, the temperature of which is increased up to its boiling point for 25-30 min and is maintained for 3 hours. The assembly s removed and the distance between the indicator arm is noted (y).

This test is sensitive to both lime and magnesia.

Mould filled with cement is placed in an autoclave and steam pressure in the autoclave is increased such that the gauge pressure of 21 kg/cm2 is attained in 1 hour and is maintained for nest 3 hours. The mould is removed and allowed to pull off and is tested for its size.

For OPC, the difference between the two readings must not exceed 10 mm. For OPC, an increase in the size of any side should not exceed 0.8 %.
