Sodium sulphate is formed if the reactants (sulphuric acid and sodium nitrate) for the preparation of nitric acid are heated above 200oC. The sodium sulphate formed deposits as a hard crust and is difficult to remove.

NaNO3 + NaHSO4 > 200o C ----> Na2SO4 + HNO3
