The semiconductor RAM of a digital computer has a word length of 16-bits and a capacity of 65,536 words. It has a cycle time of 80 ns. If the CPU is much faster than the memory, the time required to fill 1,024 bytes of this memory with all 0’s will be
1. 40.96 μs
2. 81.92 μs
3. 5.24 ms
4. 10.48 ms

Correct Answer - Option 1 : 40.96 μs

It is given that a digital computer has a word length of 16-bits i.e.

1 word = 16 bits

1024 bytes = 1024 x 8 bits = 8192 bits

So, 1024 bytes = \(\frac{8192}{16}\)= 512 words

Cycle time is 80 ns i.e. time required to fill 1 word into memory is 80 ns.

To fill 512 words into the memory is:

= 512 x 80 ns = 40960 ns

= 40.96 μsec
