  • The Amritsar session was held in the aftermath of the massacre at Jallianwala Bagh in April 1919.
  • The President of this session was Motilal Nehru and jointly led by him and the Muslim League President, Hakim Ajmal Khan.
  • Also, Congress extended support to the Khilafat Movement.
  •  The session was opened in the afternoon of December 27, 1919, in a pandal in the Aitchison Park opposite the railway line in Amritsar, with around 10,000 delegates attending from all over India.
  • Hasan Imam, who had served as the Congress President in 1918, proposed the name of Motilal Nehru as the President and Lokamanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak seconded it. Motilal Nehru delivered his Presidential address on the same day.                           

  • Amritsar session, which saw the emergence of Mahatma Gandhi to the national leadership, comes up from its eve on December 26, 1919.  
  • Mahatma Gandhi for a hartal against the Rowlatt legislation (observed on March 30, 1919, in Delhi and on April 6, 1919, throughout India).
  • Gandhi spoke on December 29 and 30 and on January 1, 1920. Motilal Nehru’s concluding address was read out by Dr Saifuddin  Kitchlew.
  • The session passed a resolution asking for the withdrawal of the Viceroy Lord Chelmsford from India. 
  • Lucknow Session of Congress in 1916 was the 31st Session of the INC. Ambica Charan Majumdar was the president of the Lucknow Session of Congress. 
  • The Calcutta session, 1920 was held under the Presidentship of Lala Lajpat Rai where Mahatma Gandhi launched the Non-Cooperation Movement.
  • In the  Ahmedabad session, 1921 Hakim Ajmal Khan was unanimously elected to preside over the Session in the absence of C.R. Das, who was in jail. Gandhiji was appointed as the sole executive authority of the Congress.
